Corrections to my Front Cover

After creating my magazine I printed it out and had a focus group with 6 members of my target audience. I received really useful feedback with positive and negative thoughts about my product and suggested improvements that I could make.

I decided to change the colour scheme of my front cover because feedback from my assessor told me that some of the text was difficult to read and it didn’t stand out from the saturated image enough. As I wanted the mast head “Abseil” to really stand out I changed the colour from a pasty yellow to a bold orange. I also added more sell lines to add interest to the front cover. This has made it look more professional.

I received feedback from a few of my friends that they preferred my improved front cover a lot more that my original one. I feel that my improved front cover has more of a sporty feel to it and it still uses a limited colour palette that my assessor originally liked.

I created a grid like layout for my front cover, in the hope of achieving a modern feel to my magazine. The feedback that I got was helpful and showed that some people liked and some people didn’t like the grid effect. Some members of my focus group said “the individual boxes are more exciting than just a plain picture” and “it stands out from other magazines in this genre” whereas other members said “it distracts me from the mast head and image” and “I would prefer just to have an image without the grid”I terefore thought I would remove the grid effect from my front cover as I thought it deistracted the audience too much from the sell lines and name of the magazine.

I believe that my improved version of my magazine front cover is much better than my original one. I preffer the choice of colour and feel there is more detail it also looks more proffessional.

Mock up Contents Page

For my contents page I took inspiration from a magazine called DOR. For one of their contents pages they used postitnotes toput th information about what was in the magazine. I tried to do this for my magazine. Altough when I took the pictures they didn’t look as effective as i would have wanted so i decided to scrap that idea and stick tomy original flat plan contents page.

I wasn’t impressed with the lighting that was produced on this shoot. As I took this photo at home I didn’t have any professional lighting equipment. I used lamps and main lights but they were as effective as if I had used professional light boxes in a studio. The background of the post its looks really dark and doesn’t fit in with the bright youthful vibe of the rest of my magazine. I tried to manipulate this image by taking away the dark background and replacing it with a bright background but this made the post its look fake and it didn’t look as effective as I would have liked.

I decided to stick more with my original flat plan for my contents page and I feel this was much more effective and worked so much better.
